Plan Basics - Things to Consider
- Deductible - A deductible is the amount that you, the insured, pays in full before your insurance starts paying. It is more or less the portion of your health risk you have agreed to take.
- Coinsurance - Coinsurance is the percentage of the bill you pay after you have met your deductible. Common coinsurance percentages are 70%, 80%, and 90%.
- Out of Pocket Maximum - This is the most your coinsurance can reach in a single year. Most companies pay 100% of your medical expenses, up to your lifetime maximum, after you pay your deductible and reach your out of pocket maximum.

- Office Visit Waiver - Some plans offer an office visit waiver. This means that your office visits are covered with a co-pay and you do not pay toward your deductible for these services.

- Lifetime Maximum - This is the maximum the plan will pay during a lifetime. If you reach this amount, your plan will stop paying claims.
- Supplemental Accident Benefit - This benefit pays a set dollar amount toward accident claims, before you are required to pay toward your deductible and coinsurance.
- Out of Network Coverage - Some plans cover out of network doctors and hospitals. Usually your deductible + your coinsurance equate to a higher dollar amount when you see an out of network provider.
